Firwood Waterloo 2 60 – 14 Liverpool Collegiate 2
Scorers – Dave Wareing, Eddie Taylor
Collegiate 2’s were looking to gain a first away win of the season and build up some impetus after last week’s fantastic victory against Caldy 3’s.
The game started slowly, with both teams defending well, but eventually after a lot of pressure in the Collegiate half, Waterloo were able to draw first blood with a well worked try in the corner.
Collegiate bounced back from this and showed some promise, yet Waterloo would be the team to gain the next score and put the pressure on.
A fantastic last ten minutes of the first half showed the potential of the Collegiate 2nd team with some brilliant rugby being played.
After great phase play, Dave Proctor showed a touch of class with a Sonny Bill Williams style offload to Captain Dave Wareing for him to score under the posts.
This promising passage of play continued until the end of the half, with a strong scrum from Collegiate setting up the platform for Eddie Taylor to go over the line, putting Collegiate into the lead going into the half.
Unfortunately for Collegiate, the start of the second half was not ideal. Quick tries early on swung the momentum of the game into Waterloo’s favour and made the task for Collegiate increasingly difficult.
Waterloo were able to use the large pitch to their advantage, with the ball being shipped wide effectively to continue the scoreboard ticking over for the remainder of the second half.
The 2nd XV fought hard until the final whistle but the second half showed the step up and the difficulty that comes with promotion.
