Liverpool Collegiate knew that they would be in for a tough match against the league leaders and were looking to bounce back after last week’s defeat.

The first half started with Warrington playing an effective kicking game, forcing Collegiate deep and into the corners of their half. It was not long before Warrington put points onto the board. Poor decisions with the ball and ineffective kicks gave Warrington possession too easily. Fantastic footwork resulted in the Warrington winger scrambling into the corner, after making his way through the Collegiate defence.

The Warrington backs play was effective, using the wide pitch to stretch the Collegiate defence for their second try. Penalties hurt Collegiate, both in terms of position and points on the board, with Warrington adding the points and placing more pressure on the visitors. A powerful run through the midfield by Warrington’s centre put them further into the lead, taking the game away from Collegiate early on.

There were limited times during the first half were Collegiate were able to make ground through phase play. But Warrington dominated possession, and with tenacious defence, were able to mess up Collegiate ball and result in penalties against the Blue and Blue.

An unfortunate try to concede next for the visitors, with Collegiate looking like they were gaining some momentum, but a loose ball was pounced on, gifting a try to Warrington. Strong counter attacking rugby led to another score, taking the game to 36-0 at half time.

A slow start to the second half punished Collegiate, similar to other games this season, with quick scores stopping the chance of any comeback. A last ditch tackle by Sean Hogan on the five metre line was not enough to stop another Warrington try, with the home side reacting quickest to go over the line.

Next came an interception try rubbing salt into the wounds for Collegiate. Warrington showed off their fast style of rugby, creating a 7 on 2 overlap. More luck for the home side with the intended passed ball somehow finding the wingers hands.

With twenty minutes to go in the game it was looking bleak, but Collegiate showed determination and character. Gaining territory, combined with strong defence, Warrington were not able to add to the scoreboard, but Collegiate sadly couldn't break the shutout.

Collegiate play host this week to Rossendale 2’s and will be hoping to get back to winning ways.
